High Hopes: A Song for 2019
The very first number one song on the Billboard Pop Charts for 2019 was High Hopes by Panic at the Disco. This feels a bit serendipitous for me, because I had recently chosen it as my new theme song.
The lyrics of the song speak to dreaming big dreams. Brenden Urie sings of the power of hope and positivity and making it despite the odds. Even if you are strange or weird or your dream seems wild and unattainable to the rest of the world. A true American dream anthem. (The tune is catch as hell too, so it’s got that going for it as well!)
It’s easy to apply this message to my own aspirations and I hope a lot of people do the same. To me it seems that right now there’s kind of a vibe of positivity and progress that’s lurking underneath all the tension and fear and frustration. I hope that the turning of the calendar from one year to the next is all this vibe needs to bust out and do great things.
2017 was all about finding my path and I chose Lauren Alaina’s Road Less Traveled as my theme song. 2018 was just plain ugly. While I didn’t specifically choose a song to represent this time period, I will confess to frequently blasting T Swift’s Bad Blood and Nice Things alone in my car. 2019 will be a year of high hopes, and I’m looking forward with happy anticipation as I work to make my dreams come true. Hopefully 2020 will follow as a year of abundant success and a song that embodies it will cooperatively emerge.
